How to get to Argentina

Most travelers arrive in Argentina by air, landing at Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. Overland routes from neighboring countries and ferry services from Uruguay are also available, though flights remain the most convenient option.

If you're planning a trip to Argentina, it’s worth booking flights well in advance to snag the best deals.

Flights to Argentina

Airfares vary by season. The most expensive times to fly are December-February, around Easter, and in July-August, when Argentines take their winter holidays. The cheapest fares are typically found March-June and September-November. Flying on weekends can also increase ticket prices. Booking 3-6 months in advance usually offers the best deals, as last-minute discounts are rare.

From the UK and Ireland

British Airways now operates direct flights from London Heathrow (LHR) to Buenos Aires (EZE). The flight takes around 14 hours and is the fastest option from the UK. Fares start at around £650 in low season, rising to over £1000 in high season.

Other options include Iberia via Madrid, Air France via Paris, and LATAM via São Paulo. These flights are sometimes cheaper but increase travel time to 16+ hours.

From Ireland, there are no direct flights to Argentina. The best option is to connect via London, Madrid, or the US. While flights through New York or Miami may be slightly more expensive, they can be more convenient than multiple European layovers.

From the US and Canada

American Airlines, United, and Aerolíneas Argentinas offer nonstop flights from New York, Chicago, Washington, and Miami to Buenos Aires. Flying time is around 11 hours from New York and Chicago, and 9 hours from Miami. Fares start at $900 in low season, reaching $1800 in high season.

Air Canada now operates direct flights from Toronto (YYZ) to Buenos Aires (EZE), eliminating the need for a stop in Santiago. Travelers from Vancouver or other Canadian cities will still need to connect through Toronto or the US.

From Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa

Qantas resumed direct flights from Sydney (SYD) to Buenos Aires (EZE) in 2023, making it the best option for Australian travelers. Flight time is around 14 hours. LATAM still operates flights via Santiago, which may be a cheaper alternative.

There are no direct flights from New Zealand to Argentina. Travelers must connect through Sydney or Santiago.

For South Africa, South African Airways no longer operates flights to Argentina. The best options are to fly via São Paulo with LATAM or via Europe (Madrid or London).

Airfares depend on the season and length of stay. Flights from Australia start at around A$2000 in low season, while flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town begin at approximately ZAR8500.

Domestic flights and airport transfers

Buenos Aires has two major airports, and knowing the difference is important if you have a connecting flight:

  • Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) – Handles most international flights.
  • Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP) – Handles domestic and some regional flights to destinations like Iguazú Falls, Patagonia, and Mendoza.

If you're continuing to another city, you may need to transfer between Ezeiza and Aeroparque. The journey takes at least an hour by taxi or shuttle, so plan your connections carefully.

Overland travel to Argentina

Buses from neighboring countries

Argentina has a well-developed long-distance bus network, making it easy to arrive overland from Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The most popular international routes include:

  • Santiago (Chile) to Buenos Aires or Mendoza – a scenic route through the Andes.
  • São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Buenos Aires – a long but direct trip.
  • Asunción (Paraguay) to Buenos Aires – a good option for travelers exploring northern Argentina.
  • La Paz or Uyuni (Bolivia) to Salta or Jujuy – ideal for those traveling through the Atacama Desert and Argentine Northwest.

From Peru, travelers usually cross into Bolivia first before continuing into Argentina.

Ferries from Uruguay

If you’re coming from Montevideo or Colonia, the Buquebus ferry is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Buenos Aires. The journey from Montevideo takes 2–3 hours, while the Colonia route takes just over an hour. Both ferries arrive at Puerto Madero, within walking distance of central Buenos Aires.
