A trip to the South Atlantic
First off, we’re in South Georgia, an eyebrow-shaped island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Travel writer and Rough Guides podcast heavyweight Shafik Meghji shares stories from a recent expedition. He ventured from Argentina to the Falkland Islands, to South Georgia and finally the Antarctic Peninsula. From curious penguins to passing glaciers the size of the Isle of Man, he reveals shares his experiences visiting one of the remotest spots on earth.
Daredevil antics in Acapulco
Then we whizz across to Mexico, where Rough Guides author Daniel Stables stumbled across the ultimate adrenaline rush. In the southwest city of Acapulco, daredevil residents take part in a heart-stopping activity. Scrambling up steep, jagged cliffs, they take it in turns to dive into the water from a great height. Divers must time their leap with the incoming tide so there’s enough water for them to land in. Dan wrote about this hair-raising experience in our upcoming Make the Most of Your Time on Earth book, and gives us the lowdown, from the best viewpoints to a touching solitary moment at the clifftop.
The 100 Best Places on Earth
We also chat with fellow Rough Guides editor Helen Fanthorpe, who edited The 100 Best Places on Earth: 2020. We go behind the scenes and discover some of her favourite entries.
At Rough Guides, we’ve always been passionate about inspiring readers (and listeners!) to go beyond their comfort zone. We aim to inspire people to immerse themselves in a destination’s culture and traditions. So, whether you want to retrace Odysseus’s footsteps on Mljet, spot whales in California, go wild camping on the Arabian Peninsula or more – the list truly goes on – there’s plenty of ways to get stuck in to your next adventure.
It’s been an exciting fourth series and we hope you’ve enjoyed listening to the fascinating stories our guests and contributors have shared. Please let us know what you think. Rate us on Apple Podcasts and get in touch on Twitter using #roughguidespod!
