If you're a first-time visitor to Cancun, Zona Hotelera is the place to stay. This 22-kilometer stretch of land, shaped like a number 7, is packed with resorts, beaches, and attractions. You'll find some of Cancun's most popular beaches here, like Playa Delfines and Playa Tortugas.

  • Pros: Laid-back vibe, calm beaches, family-friendly attractions, easy to get around
  • Cons: Requires a ferry ride to reach, limited nightlife options

Families looking for a more laid-back vibe should set their sights on Isla Mujeres. This small island off Cancun's coast is great for a family getaway. Playa Norte's calm waters are perfect for little ones, while the Turtle Farm (Tortugranja) is a fun way to spend a day.

You can rent a golf cart to get around safely and easily, since the island is pretty small and everything is close by. The ruins of Ixchel Temple provide some interesting history, and the colorful downtown area is perfect for leisurely walks.

For extra fun, visit Garrafon Natural Reef Park for zip-lining and kayaking. The calm waters are also great for introducing kids to snorkeling or taking a glass-bottom boat tour. In the evenings, you can catch a beautiful sunset at Punta Sur or join in sea turtle releases during nesting season.

Unlike the busier tourist hubs like Cancun, Puerto Morelos has managed to hold onto its small-town feel. The locals are friendly, and the pace of life is a bit slower, giving you a real taste of what life is like here.

Start your night with yard-long cocktails at Señor Frog's, and when you're ready to dance, head to Coco Bongo, famous for its acrobatic shows and non-stop music. The City Nightclub is another must-visit—it's huge, with world-renowned DJs and state-of-the-art light shows.

If you're looking for something a bit more refined, Harry's Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar serves exquisite cuts of meat and fresh seafood with stunning ocean views. La Distileria offers an impressive selection of tequilas and mezcals, perfect for those looking to sample local spirits.

Budget travelers needn't feel left out – Downtown Cancun offers an authentic slice of Mexican life that won't break the bank. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine Mercado 28, where you can haggle for souvenirs and sample street food to your heart's content. 

For a memorable meal, check out La Habichuela Downtown, a beloved spot serving Mexican and Caribbean dishes in a lovely garden setting. For a quick, affordable bite, stroll along Avenida Tulum and hit up the street food stalls. If you’re in the mood for a drink, swing by Los De Pescado, a chill bar with a good mezcal selection and live music.

There’s plenty to do for free or cheap, like admiring the vibrant street art, relaxing at Parque de las Palapas, or hitting up the nearby public beach Playa Las Perlas. History buffs will enjoy the Mayan Museum of Cancun, which dives deep into the region’s history.
