Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is a diverse paradise with something for every traveler. From the sunny beaches of Costa Adeje to the moon-like landscapes of Mount Teide National Park, the island offers a mix of contrasting experiences. Picking the right place to stay can really shape your Tenerife adventure, whether you're after the lively nightlife of Playa de las Américas or the cultural richness of Santa Cruz. In this article, we'll guide you through the best areas to stay in Tenerife, helping you find the perfect base for your Canarian getaway.

Best area first-time visitors: Puerto de la Cruz

  • My recommendation: Hotel Botanico y Oriental Spa Garden
  • Location: Northern coast of Tenerife, at the foot of La Orotava Valley
  • Pros: Blend of traditional Canarian charm and tourist amenities, beautiful beaches and natural pools, lush surroundings, cooler climate, proximity to attractions
  • Cons: Can be crowded during peak seasons, weather sometimes cloudier than the south, fewer all-inclusive resorts compared to southern resorts

Puerto de la Cruz is great for first-time visitors because it offers an ideal mix of Canarian culture and tourist-friendly amenities. The highlight of the town is the Lago Martiánez, a complex of saltwater pools designed by César Manrique. Swimming here is a unique experience, with breathtaking ocean views.

The historic old town is centered around Plaza del Charco — where you can admire traditional architecture and soak in the lively atmosphere. If you love nature, don't miss the Botanical Gardens, which boast an impressive collection of tropical and subtropical plants. Meanwhile families can enjoy Loro Parque, one of the best zoos in Europe.

Puerto de la Cruz exudes a relaxed vibe and seamlessly blends its fishing village roots with modern amenities. Here you’ll find an atmosphere that's both authentic and welcoming to visitors.

Take a refreshing swim in the natural rock pools of El Caleton, or visit the San Telmo Promenade for stunning coastal views and a peek at the San Telmo Chapel. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the contemporary works at TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes). To truly immerse yourself in local culture, plan your visit around the Carnival celebrations in February or the Fiestas de Julio in July, both featuring vibrant parades and street parties.

Why I love it: Puerto de la Cruz captures the essence of Tenerife, offering first-time visitors a perfect balance of traditional Canarian charm and modern conveniences.
