Discover what makes Costa Rica unforgettable
Explore the fiery heart of Costa Rica at Arenal or Poás Volcano, where the earth’s raw energy comes to life. Walk through lush forests that surround the towering volcanoes, trek along trails formed by ancient lava flows, and soak in the rejuvenating natural hot springs heated by the volcanoes' geothermal activity. The experience of standing on the rim of a crater, gazing into the bubbling waters of a crater lake, is something you won’t forget. As the mist rises from the thermal pools and steam vents hiss from the earth, you'll feel the true power of nature surrounding you. The dramatic landscapes and the raw energy of the volcanoes will leave you in awe, reminding you of the incredible forces that shape our world.
Costa Rica’s beaches are pure paradise, each one offering a unique experience. Ride the famous Pacific waves at Tamarindo, or relax on the pristine Caribbean shores while watching baby turtles hatch and make their way to the sea. Picture yourself on golden sands, with palm trees swaying in the breeze, and sunsets that paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. Whether you're seeking adventure or a peaceful retreat, Costa Rica's beaches are the ultimate escape into nature's beauty.
Venture into Costa Rica’s lush jungles, where the air is thick with the sounds of toucans, sloths, and howler monkeys. Glide through the canopy on a zipline, feeling the thrill as you soar above the treetops. Hike along misty trails that lead to hidden waterfalls, their waters cascading through verdant forests. Drift down winding rivers, surrounded by vibrant greenery and wildlife that seems to leap out of every corner. It’s like stepping into a real-life nature documentary, where every moment brings a new adventure, and awe awaits at every turn.
More than a phrase, ‘Pura Vida’ is Costa Rica’s way of life—simple, joyful, and deeply connected to nature. It’s a mindset that celebrates living in the moment and embracing a slower pace. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of coffee with locals on a sunny veranda, practicing yoga by the ocean, or hiking through lush jungles, ‘Pura Vida’ is always present. It’s about appreciating the beauty around you, finding joy in the everyday, and living with gratitude. This philosophy will stay with you long after your trip, reminding you to savor life and connect with nature in every step you take.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April. The dry season boasts plenty of sunshine, making it an ideal time for wildlife-spotting, lounging on Costa Rica's best beaches and outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking and white water rafting.
If you can, try to avoid peak season (the North American winter months). This is the most popular (and expensive) time to travel to Costa Rica. If you travel, then, you should weigh up the weather against the cost and the crowds. Bear in mind that you’ll have to book accommodation around three months in advance to secure a room
If you don’t mind getting a little wet, visit Costa Rica between May and November when accommodation prices are low. Rain showers ease up in June and July, creating a brief window for wildlife-spotting. Travelers keen to explore beyond the usual spots should avoid September and October — this is when the rain is at its heaviest, and remote areas become inaccessible by road. If you're wondering how much time you need in Costa Rica, plan at least a week to make the most of its rainforests and wildlife, even during the wetter months.
The best time to visit is the dry season (mid-December to April), with sunny days and little rain.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for organising such a fabulous trip for us to see beautiful Costa Rica with its variety of landscapes. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and spotted some wonderful wildlife. The timing was just right too getting there just before the rainy season and it was very quiet in the hotel at Manuel Antonio and at the lodge in Bajos del Toro we were the only guests! What a fabulous place though up in the cloud forest. Thanks again and hopefully I'll be arranging my next trip through Rough Guides! We only had one small delay when our transport from the airport at Puerto Jimenez to Encanta La Vida didn't arrive but the people there were so helpful in getting us a taxi instead. Many thanks again for an unforgettable experience!
We booked a trip to Costa Rica with Rough Guide - what a fantastic holiday, they got it just right, beautiful hotels, great trips, excellent, and friendly and knowledgeable drivers. There was a lovely pace to the holiday with plenty to do but also time to chill and reflect. Highly recommended
The trip planning with the Rough Guides and their local expert Roberto went smoothly and with great recommendations for lodging and activities. the actual trip went all as planned and exceeded our expectations on lodging, places visited and numerous activities all well arranged by the Rough Guides group. We had a fantastic trip in summary. thank you Rough Guides and Roberto, i highly recommend these folks.
Everything was well organized, all pick ups were on time! The excursions were great, really enjoyed the rafting and ziplining! Could have combined some excursions with transport days to fit in a few more activities. Overall great trip!
Our trip has been amazing. This is our third time in Sri Lanka and possibly my favourite trip. I am already planning my next one.
We recently returned from Costa Rica having had a wonderful experience being guided through local expert. The guide and the driver were fantastic, ensuring that we saw as much of the wildlife as possible and generally had a great time. We cannot recommend them highly enough.
