The mountains visible from the Montenegrin coast hint at the beauty of its interior, an area sadly bypassed by most travellers. The capital, Podgorica, is one of the most natural in Europe but gets almost no backpackers while Cetinje, the former capital, makes a delightful stopover. Best of all is the mountainous north, particularly Durmitor, a spectacular national park where you can hike though unspoilt pastureland, ski past 2000-metre-plus peaks, or raft through the colossal Tara Canyon.
