Old photographs of Kathmandu show the area east of Kantipath dominated by the palaces and residences of the ruling Rana family, with villages – Hadigaun, Dilli Bazaar, Baneswar – surrounded by farmland beyond. Today, the palaces have mostly been taken over by government ministries, while the boulevards around the old Royal Palace are lined with airline offices and high-end hotels; the old villages have become congested bazaars, and the farmland subdivided into walled suburban compounds.
Pashupatinath, which lies just east of the Ring Road, is covered here.
