Is August a good time to visit the Philippines?

The weather in the Philippines in August is best suited for travelers who enjoy quieter destinations. Despite frequent downpours and occasional typhoons, western areas like Palawan remain relatively dry, offering plenty of opportunity for escaping to the beach.

Adventurous travelers can also explore eco-tourism spots like Siargao’s mangroves. With fewer tourists and lower travel costs, August is a budget-friendly time to visit despite the rains, and with proper planning, it can still offer memorable adventures.

What about the crowds and cost?

August is another off-peak month in the Philippines due to this being the rainy season. Tourist numbers are low, and even popular destinations like Cebu and Coron are significantly less crowded. Travel costs are generally reduced, with more affordable rates for hotels, tours, and flights widely available.

While some activities may be affected by the weather, the quiet and cost savings make August an appealing time for travelers who prefer solitude and flexibility.

Things to do in the Philippines in August

August is a rainy month but does bring opportunities for quieter getaways and lush, green scenery. With fewer tourists about the place, it’s ideal for travelers who desire a little solitude along with their adventure. Here are some of the best things to do in the Philippines in August to get the most out of your trip.

Explore Siargao’s mangrove forests

Siargao’s mangrove forests are a beauty to behold during the rainy season. In 2021, this island was hit by super typhoon Rai. Most boats on the island were destroyed, but some survived, thanks to the protection offered to them by the hardy, salt-water mangrove forests. The calm mangrove waters are best explored by kayak or paddleboard, which can be rented from Green House, an Australian-run eco-resort. The forests are abundant with wildlife.

Visit Batad Rice Terraces

The isolated village of Batad offers rural isolation and spectacular scenery. It is located in a natural amphitheater near the 130ft-high Tappia Waterfall, which has a deep pool bathing pool at its bottom. The appearance of rice terraces themselves is only enhanced by the rains, making them greener and more lush.

Despite several guest houses having sprung up in recent years, the village remains peaceful. There are several great hiking trails nearby – the guest houses will point you toward a guide. Trekking is the best way to experience the landscape.

Discover Lake Danao in Leyte

This 370-acre guitar-shaped lake is located in the Lake Danao Natural Park, 11 miles northeast of Ormoc, and therefore doable as a day trip. It is volcanic in origin and offers a peaceful escape and good hiking in the surrounding mountains. Renting a kayak or paddleboat is a great way to get out onto its calm waters and marvel at the lush, green, forested hills surrounding it.

Take a dip at Mimbalot Falls

If wild swimming is your thing, a dip at Mimbalot Falls in Iligan City will make a good addition to any rainy-season Philippines itinerary. In August, the cascading waters are at their most swollen. There are plenty of shallower pools where you can safely take a refreshing dip. Part of the falls’ appeal is how undeveloped they are. You will find no restaurants or stalls selling saris here. For the adrenaline junkie, a zipline within the Eco Park offers a birds-eye view of Mimbalot Falls and some of the other waterfalls nearby.

Experience Balabac’s remote beaches

Balabac in Palawan offers several stunning beaches relatively free from crowds at this time of year. Onuk Island is a truly paradisical getaway with surrounding shallow turquoise seas that make a giant pool in which to swim or snorkel. Nighttime offers the chance to spot bioluminescent plankton on the sand or simply lie back and gaze at the stars.

Festivals and events in the Philippines in August

Despite this being the rainy season, August plays host to several events that showcase Filipino traditions, art, culture, and identity.

  • Kadayawan Festival: Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival celebrates thanksgiving for nature’s bounty with street dancing, floral floats, and exhibits featuring the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
  • Pangapog Festival: This harvest festival on Samal Island includes boat races, music, and performances that reflect the island’s agricultural traditions and coastal charm.
  • Tuna Festival (early events): Preparations for the Tuna Festival in General Santos City often begin in August. The festival celebrates the fishing industry with culinary showcases and cultural activities.
