Hike Mount Apo
Clear skies and cooler weather in December create perfect conditions for trekking Mount Apo, whose name means “grandfather of all mountains.” Apo’s 2,954m-high summit offers views that will take the breath away, and the hike up promises an unforgettable adventure. The highest peak in the Philippines, Mount Apo, is actually a volcano that has been certified as “inactive.” Its national park contains waterfalls, lakes, geysers, rapids, primeval forests, sulfur pillars, and exotic plants, including ferns, orchids, and carnivorous pitcher plants.
The local Bagobos people call the mountain “Sandawa,” meaning “Mountain of Sulfur,” and consider it sacred. They believe the gods Apo and Mandaragan inhabit its upper slopes. Two main routes lead to the summit. The Kidapawan Trail on the Cotabato side features hot springs, river crossings, and a steep trek up through forest via swampy Lake Venado. The Kapatagan Trail on the Davao side is more challenging and cuts through more recognizably volcanic terrain. Tour operators recommend three to four days to reach the summit.
