Things to do in the Philippines in November

November ushers in the dry season, bringing sunny days and cooler evenings. This is the perfect time to enjoy the Philippines’ stunning beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush green landscapes. Here are some of the best things to do in the Philippines in November to get the most out of your trip.

Visit Malapascua Island

Known for its thresher sharks, Malapascua offers incredible diving opportunities and is the one site in the world where divers are virtually guaranteed to spot a thresher shark. Each morning, before sunrise and again just before sunset, the sharks congregate around Monad Shoal, where wrasse fish ‘clean’ the sharks by eating the parasites from their skins. There are also opportunities to go night diving and photograph the psychedelic Mandarin fish, but you will need at least an advanced open water diver license if you wish to swim at Monad Shoal.

Above water, the island is easily explorable, being only 1.5 miles long and less than half a mile wide. Long stretches of white sand can be found all around the coast. Bounty Beach is more commercialized with stores, hotels, and restaurants, but Langub Beach and Guimbitayan Beach are much less frequented and more secluded – perfect for a yoga session. The lighthouse at Lighthouse Beach can be climbed and offers spectacular sea views. The clear November waters enhance visibility, making this an ideal time for marine exploration.

Explore Kalanggaman Island

November is the best time of year to enjoy Kalanggaman’s spectacular white sandbar and calm waters. Located between Leyte and Cebu in the Visayas Archipelago, this remote islet has little more than its sandbar, a few shade-giving trees, and some picnic benches. Yet the clear-blue surrounding waters teem with marine life and thus provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling and kayaking.

You can rent both on the island. There isn’t much by way of amenities, so be sure to bring food and drink with you and charge all your electronic gadgets before you arrive.

Hike Mount Kanlaon

Located on Negros Island, at 7989ft, Mount Kanlaon is the highest peak in the Visayas and one of the thirteen most active volcanoes in the country. Climbing it is not to be taken lightly. Eruptions do occur, and climbers have perished attempting to reach the summit. The crater’s rim is a precipitous knife-edge ridge overlooking a chasm. Locals say the mountain is home to numerous spirits.

The forest that clings to its slopes contains all kinds of fauna, including pythons and tube-nosed bats. It also happened to be President Manuel Quezon’s hideout from the invading Japanese in World War II. November’s cooler weather creates excellent conditions for trekking the volcanic terrain.

Relax on Samal Island

Samal, near Davao, offers several quiet beaches, scuba diving, the Hagimit Falls (great for a wild dip), and multiple luxurious resorts. Also worth visiting is the Monfort Bat Sanctuary, home to a colony of 2.3 million fruit bats. At sunset, they leave their cave to find food, and visitors are drawn from all around the world to witness this incredible sight.

Snorkel at Apo Island

Apo Island’s coral yards and sea turtles are a highlight in November. The calm seas and warm weather make this a top time to snorkel here.

Festivals and events in the Philippines in November

November brings a mix of unique festivals and cultural showcases, reflecting the country’s vibrant history and artistry.

  • Higantes Festival: In Angono, Rizal, giant papier-mâché figures parade through the streets in this lively celebration honoring San Clemente, the patron saint of fishermen.
  • Kawayanan Festival: Baler, Aurora, celebrates the bamboo industry with exhibits, workshops, and cultural performances, highlighting the importance of bamboo in local craftsmanship.
  • Pintaflores Festival: In San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, this festival combines painted floral patterns and lively street dancing, celebrating the city’s creativity and vibrant culture.
