updated 11.12.2024

Romania in December feels like a scene from a fairytale. Snow blankets the countryside, and towns fill with the warmth of vacation traditions. Christmas markets become lively hubs, while iconic landmarks like Bran Castle take on an enchanting winter charm. Even the monasteries seem to hold a quiet magic in the crisp, cold air. Here's what to know about the weather in Romania in December.

Romania in December at a glance

  • Cold temperatures from 30°F to 39°F (-1°C to 4°C)
  • Snow likely, especially in mountain regions
  • Tourist numbers pick up around Christmas markets
  • Higher prices during vacation season but otherwise affordable

Is December a good time to visit Romania?

The weather in Romania in December can actually be one of its most enchanting features, despite (or perhaps because of) the winter chill. You'll be stepping into the heart of winter, with temperatures that demand warm layers but reward you with stunning snow-covered landscapes, especially in the Carpathian Mountains.

While swimming at the Black Sea is definitely out of the question, you'll find plenty of wonderful winter activities to fill your days. The Christmas markets in cities like Bucharest and Sibiu are absolutely magical, and you can't beat the atmosphere in medieval Brașov when it's dressed in snow.

When it comes to rainfall, December actually sees less precipitation than fall months, with an average of 40-45mm spread across 12-14 days. However, much of this precipitation falls as snow.  If you're still not sold, see our favorite places to visit in December.

Average daily temperatures in December

December ushers in a frosty chill, with daytime temperatures in lowland areas ranging between 34-41°F (1-5°C) and dropping to 23-30°F (-5 to -1°C) at night. While colder than November, it's slightly milder than January, the peak of winter. In the mountains, the mercury rarely rises above freezing, so come prepared with your warmest layers.

With about 8-9 hours of daylight, the short days make for cozy evenings. The sun typically sets around 4:30 PM, so it’s best to plan your outdoor adventures earlier in the day.

What about the crowd and cost?

December is a quieter time to visit Romania, with fewer tourists compared to the summer months. The exception? The festive week between Christmas and New Year’s, when prices rise and popular spots get livelier. Outside this window, you’ll find deals on flights and accommodations.

For an even quieter experience, late November or early January offers similar winter vibes without the vacation rush. If snow isn’t your thing, aim for May or September to enjoy mild weather and smaller crowds. See our full guide to when to go to Romania

Christmas Markets

Romania’s Christmas markets are pure vacation magic. In Sibiu, the medieval Grand Square transforms into a festive wonderland with wooden chalets selling handcrafted ornaments and traditional treats. Sip on mulled wine, nibble on cozonac (sweet bread), and don’t miss kürtőskalács (chimney cake), served warm and fresh. Bucharest and Brașov also light up with twinkling decorations, carolers, and a cozy atmosphere.

Ski at Straja Resort

If skiing is on your December agenda, Straja Resort in the Vâlcan Mountains is a hidden gem. With 12 miles (20 km) of slopes catering to all skill levels, it’s perfect for beginners and experts alike. Perched at 4,741 feet (1,445 m), Straja offers reliable snow and a charming mountain village vibe that’s hard to beat. Plus, it’s much quieter than Romania’s busier ski destinations, so you can focus on the slopes without the crowds.

Experience New Year's "Ursul" in Moldova Region

You won’t find a New Year’s celebration like this anywhere else. In Moldova’s villages, particularly around Suceava, locals dress in real bear skins and perform the Ursul (Bear Dance), an ancient ritual meant to chase away bad spirits. The lively dances, accompanied by drums and pan flutes, are  completely unique.

Visit the Dimitrie Gusti Village Museum in Bucharest

This open-air museum in Herăstrău Park is even more enchanting under a blanket of snow. Spread across 25 acres (100,000 square meters), it’s like stepping into a storybook of Romania’s rural past, with original wooden houses, windmills, and churches relocated from across the country. December adds a festive twist, with traditional winter celebrations featuring artisans, crafts, and even vacation baking demonstrations. Just bundle up—it’s worth spending a few hours exploring.

Ice Skate at Târgu Secuiesc's Olympic-sized Rink

Târgu Secuiesc might be a small town, but its Olympic-sized ice rink is a winter highlight. Spacious and usually less crowded than city rinks, it’s ideal for beginners and seasoned skaters alike. December brings festive music, lights, and vacation events that make skating here extra special. Visit during weekday afternoons for a peaceful and uncrowded glide across the ice.
