Is January a good time to visit Romania?

January in Romania means that winter is in full swing. You're looking at cold, crisp days with plenty of snow, especially in the Carpathian Mountains. The weather in Romania in January can be harsh, with frequent snow and biting winds that sweep across the country.

That might sound like a challenge, but for the right traveler, it’s an opportunity. If you love winter sports, the Carpathian Mountains are a dream. Resorts like Poiana Brașov and Sinaia offer excellent skiing conditions. The snow-draped medieval towns like Sighișoara take on an almost fairy-tale quality that you just don't get in warmer months. If you're still not sold, see our favorite places to visit in January.

Average daily temperatures in January

Bundle up, because Romania's January temperatures are no joke! Daytime highs typically hover around 35°F (2°C), while nighttime lows can plummet to a chilly 21°F (-6°C). These temperatures are among the coldest you'll experience in Romania all year - this month comes with proper winter weather.

During the day, you might get lucky with some crisp, sunny periods, but don't let that fool you - the wind chill can make it feel even colder than the thermometer suggests. Once the sun sets (which happens pretty early this time of year), temperatures drop quickly. You're looking at about 8-9 hours of daylight, with sunrise around 8 AM and sunset around 5 PM.

When it comes to rainfall (or rather, snowfall), January sees about 40 mm of precipitation on average, typically falling as snow rather than rain. You can expect snow or sleet on about 8 - 10 days throughout the month, so it’s safe to count on a wintry landscape. See our full guide to when to go to Romania

Things to do in Romania in January

Here’s a short list of some great activities to explore given the weather in Romania in January. For more ideas, see our guide to the best things to do in Romania.

Skiing in the Carpathian Mountains

January turns the Carpathians into a haven for winter sports. Resorts like Poiana Brașov and Sinaia stand out with their diverse ski runs—Poiana Brașov alone boasts 14 slopes for all skill levels, from gentle runs for beginners to challenging black diamonds. Snow depths often hit 5 feet (1.5 meters), creating excellent powder conditions.

Visit the Ice Hotel at Bâlea Lake

Sitting at 6,673 feet (2,034 meters) in the Făgăraș Mountains, the Ice Hotel at Bâlea Lake is rebuilt every winter using blocks cut from the frozen lake. Every room is carved with its own theme, and even though it’s kept at 28°F (-2°C), you’ll stay cozy in special sleeping bags designed for the cold. The ice bar is also a fun touch—you can sip drinks from glasses made of ice. It’s a pretty cool (literally) place to check out if you’re up for a unique winter adventure.

Take the cable car to Bâlea Lake to see the frozen waterfall

Getting to Bâlea Lake is an adventure itself, thanks to the 2.2-mile (3.5-kilometer) cable car ride over snow-covered mountains. At the top, you’ll find a massive frozen waterfall—it looks like time just stopped mid-flow. On clear days, the views of the Făgăraș Mountains are incredible. Just make sure to bundle up—temperatures here can drop to 5°F (-15°C) or lower in January.

Warm up at the Bucharest Botanical Yard

If you’re looking for a break from the cold, the greenhouses at the Bucharest Botanical Yard are like stepping into another world. You’ll wander through rooms filled with everything from desert cacti to lush tropical plants, all while staying toasty warm. The Victorian-style greenhouses are gorgeous, too—definitely worth a visit on a chilly winter day.

Snowmobile on marked trails around Predeal resort

Predeal, Romania's highest resort town, offers some of the most exciting snowmobile adventures you can find. The marked trails wind through pristine forest landscapes and offer varied terrain for both beginners and experienced riders. You can rent machines by the hour or take guided tours that last anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. The trails are well-maintained and regularly groomed, with stunning views of the Bucegi Mountains along the way.
