Romania in November: weather & travel tips

updated 11.12.2024

Romania is more than just its Transylvanian reputation. It’s home to the world’s heaviest building, Europe’s longest cave bear gallery, and the first European city with electric streetlights. While Western Europe tends to get all the attention, Romania stands out with unique experiences like the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța and the curves of the Transfăgărășan highway. To help you plan your trip, here’s what you can expect from the weather in Romania in November.

Romania in November at a glance

  • Temperatures drop to 37°F to 50°F (3°C to 10°C)
  • Increased rainfall and possibility of first snow
  • Low season begins with few tourists
  • Good deals available but weather can be unpredictable

Is November a good time to visit Romania?

November has its quirks, but it’s a pretty good time if you know what to expect. The days are shorter, the air is crisp, and there’s a moody vibe that makes Romania’s medieval castles and cobbled towns feel even more magical. Just keep an umbrella handy—rain is a regular guest this month, and by the end of it, you might even see some sleet.

On average, you’re looking at about 50mm of rain over 10–12 days. It’s not a constant downpour, but it’s enough to make you want to plan your outdoor adventures carefully. Hiking is still an option if you’ve got good gear and some flexibility, but November really shines when you’re exploring cozy museums or iconic spots like Peles Castle without the crowds.

If you’re all about sunny days and outdoor adventures, November might not be your best bet. But if you don’t mind a few gloomy days, it’s a great time to enjoy a quieter, more atmospheric Romania. If you're still not sold, see our favorite places to visit in November.

Average daily temperatures in November

November is definitely sweater weather. Daytime temperatures usually hover around 45°F (7°C) in the lowlands and drop to about 32°F (0°C) at night. It’s cooler than October, but winter’s full bite hasn’t kicked in yet. Some days might surprise you with highs around 54°F (12°C), while others will stay stuck closer to 39°F (4°C).

The Black Sea coast is a touch warmer, with highs around 52°F (11°C), but the sea itself is chilly—about 57°F (14°C)—so swimming’s pretty much out. Up in the Carpathian Mountains, it’s colder all around, with daytime temps near freezing and frosty nights. With only 9–10 hours of daylight, it’s the kind of season where you want to pack your plans into the daylight hours.

What about the crowd and cost?

November is the quiet season in Romania, which means fewer tourists and smaller bills. Big-name spots like Bran Castle or the Palace of Parliament are refreshingly uncrowded, and you’ll often feel like you have the place to yourself. Hotels and rentals are much cheaper too

If you’d prefer milder weather with fewer rainy days, September or early October are solid alternatives. You’ll still avoid the summer rush but get a little more sunshine for your outdoor plans. See our full guide to when to go to Romania

Visit the National Art Museum in the former Royal Palace

A November visit to Bucharest isn't complete without stepping into the National Art Museum. Set in the former Royal Palace, this neoclassical masterpiece houses an impressive mix of Romanian medieval art, modern works, and European masters. It's a cozy retreat from the chilly air, with galleries featuring icons like Theodor Aman and Nicolae Grigorescu. Plus, the building itself is a historical marvel—it was the residence of Romanian monarchs until 1947.

Tour the Stavropoleos Monastery in Bucharest's Old Town

This architectural gem from 1724 is one of the most beautiful examples of Brâncovenesc style you'll encounter in Romania. While the monastery is tiny, its intricate stone and wood carvings will absolutely blow you away. The peaceful courtyard, filled with tombstones and architectural fragments, are worth a visit. On colder November days, the library’s collection of Byzantine music books is a hidden treasure.

Soak in the thermal pools of Băile Govora spa complex

When November's crisp air hits, there's nothing better than sinking into these mineral-rich thermal waters. Located in Vâlcea County, Băile Govora has been a go-to wellness destination since the late 1800s. The waters here are especially rich in iodine and bromine - perfect for soothing those travel-weary muscles. You'll find both indoor and outdoor pools, so don't worry about the fall weather. The surrounding pine forests are particularly beautiful this time of year.

Explore the Cotroceni Palace Museum

As the current residence of Romania's president, this palace gives you a fascinating glimpse into both historical and contemporary Romanian politics. You'll walk through lavishly decorated rooms that showcase different architectural styles, from German Renaissance to French Baroque. The palace museum takes you through Romania's royal history, with original furniture and decorations from the late 19th century.

Visit the restored Oradea Fortress

Oradea Fortress, with its star-shaped design, is a November highlight. Originally built in the 11th century, it’s been beautifully restored and stands as one of Central Europe’s largest pentagonal fortresses. Stroll along the bastions and fortress walls, where the soft fall light enhances the Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Inside, exhibitions on local history add depth to the experience.
